Progressive Wall . . .City Art Project

Hi everyone! We have had so much fun this week learning about different types of communities and neighborhoods. As I posted last week, we made a cute neighborhood out of paper sacks. Well, yesterday we made a city by making skyscrapers out of construction paper. This is working nicely for our display and our discussion of "city" and "suburb". Walking Field Trip-Neighborhoods

Hello everyone! I hope you are having a great Tuesday. We had a fun day today. All of the first graders went on a walking field trip around our school neighborhood. Camille took photos with her iPhone ahead of time, and then we made a scavenger hunt with photos of establishments in the area. Here are a few fun pics I took on our way . . and a copy of our scavenger hunt paper because I don't think I explained it very well.

Franklin's Neighborhood and {Adam-12}

Hi everyone. It is Sunday evening. Thankfully I already have my clothes ironed for tomorrow! That is always a bonus in the morning.

 I also worked on doing some organizing in my craft room, while watching Netflix. I love watching shows that I remember watching in my youth. Currently, I am going through an "Adam-12" kick. Does anyone else remember this show? I had to laugh because as a child I remember trying to figure out what they were saying on the police radio when Reed and Malloy got a call. I always thought it sounded like "Seated Man" and I never could really understood that. Now when I watch I know it is saying "See the Man". . .LOL 

In first grade tomorrow we are reading a book called "Franklin's Neighborhood". I have a lot of Franklin books but had not heard of this one . . .we realized it is one of the older Franklin books and in fact it is only available used or through second party sellers. Anyway, it follows Franklin as he works on a project in which he tries to decide the best thing about his neighborhood. . .

Global Perspective

A few months ago I was getting ready to teach my map unit when I "happened" across this pin on pinterest. I couldn't get back to the original site, grrrr, so I decided to make my own. If you happen to know who DID come up with this please let me know so I can put credit where it is due!

This is what I came up with:

Me on the Map

To get the pictures I simply searched for our state, county, or city in google images. To get where our school was I found a street map of our city and moved around until I found our school on the map. Those of you in Iron County are in luck, all you will have to do is find your school on a map when you print this.

I just got thinking it might be better to have the kids write the labels for each of the pictures. I used to be wary of having the kids write anything, but the more I let them do the writing I have found the more they take ownership in their learning. I hope I remember my own advice for next year. ;)

National Symbols Activity

Melonheadz and KPM Doodles both have some fun, new patriotic clip art sets availabe. I really wanted to do something with them so I made this National Symbols Matching Activity with pictures and descriptions. In a couple of days I am also going to post it in the black/white format to give to the students. Here is a preview. . .
