Pumpkin Syllables and an Awesome Halloween Craft Book

Greetings everyone. I hope your day is going well. Wow, tomorrow is already Friday! Today, we rearranged our classroom and wiped down all of the counters. It is always a good feeling to do that. Tomorrow, the kids are going to organize the inside of their desks. I think this is important, even in First grade. I have 2 things to share with you today. One is a "Pumpkin Syllables" freebie and the other is a cool craft book, that has nothing to do with anything, but I love it anyway!

Here is the book . . .this is the most delightful book to look at if you like crafts and Halloween. I don't know if I will even make anything out of it, but I LoVe LooKiNg at it AnYwAY!!! I saw it in a bookstore this weekend, and then promptly went home and ordered it from Amazon, (and saved about 6 bucks!) You can preview it on Amazon . . .

Pumpkins, Parent Conference and Pens! {and Lucy}

  Hey Gang! How are you today? I can't believe that tomorrow is the first day of October. {already!} In Utah, this is when we really notice a weather change. It might be about 80 degrees as it was today, or there may be snow on the ground. We are planning to change out the big flower pots and plant mums in them to enjoy for a while. 

We did the funniest thing yesterday. . .we left the house to go to a family birthday and we forgot about LUCY! You see, she is busy by nature (code for sometimes meddlesome) and we always put her in her kennel when we leave the house for her own safety as well the house's safety. We forgot, we were gone a couple of hours and we walked in the house and there she was! Looking at us curiously. She had gone in her kennel anyway, and waited with the door open. She was GOOD! Yay Lucy! We are so proud of her. :)

We are going to start some pumpkin activities this week and are looking forward to our annual pumpkin patch field trip week after next. Here is a little freebie in honor of the occasion . . .

Thinking about Pumpkins . . .Book, Glyph Freebie

Hey everyone! Happy Tuesday. Are you going to watch "The Voice" tonight? I am waiting for it to come on.

Guess What? I have been thinking about Pumpkins! I mentioned earlier that I love all things FALL. :)
I made a very simple pumpkin glyph that I am sharing tonight.  .  .pictures and download links for patterns etc. below . . .Do you have a favorite book about pumpkins? Let me know if you do! I really like this one . . .

Pumpkin Brace

We all saw this great pumpkin brace (scroll down a bit) on pinterest, and immediately wanted to do this with our kids. We couldn't find the instructions, so we made up some of our own.

Here is what we came up with.

For the "whole pumpkin" each student will need: 1- 9x10 orange construction paper, 1- 1x2 brown construction paper. I had the kids cut their own pumpkin out, add the stem and then glue it on the left hand side of a 12x18 piece of black construction paper.

For the "parts of a pumpkin" each student will need: 1- 2x9 orange construction paper (skin), 1- 2x9 orange copy paper (flesh), small handful of shredded orange copy paper (pulp), 1- 3x4 white (cut multiple seeds from), 1- 1x2 brown construction paper (stem/peduncle). As we put the "parts of a pumpkin" side together, I showed the kids a cross section of a pumpkin we had left over from some of our pumpkin investigations from the day before. It made it easier for me to reinforce the different parts with the real thing in front of them.

Here are the words we used to label our pumpkins.

This is a definite addition to my yearly pumpkin unit. It was sooooo much fun!

Pumpkin Seeds!

373 of them to be exact! Today we counted our pumpkin seeds from the pumpkin we cleaned out yesterday. We made a poster out of orange bulletin board paper and grouped the seeds by 10's and 1's. We put the seeds into tiny baggies. This is what it looks like: ( I am also including the link to the printable for the title and numbers.)

 Today we were "Pumpkin Investigators" It was a lot of fun! Before we cleaned out the pumpkin we estimated how many seeds might be in the pumpkin. We recorded our estimates on the form below.
