People in our Community

I found this you tube video and used it during our community unit. The kids really enjoyed it. Some of the jobs aren't exactly what we would call them here in the states, but it was cute enough that the kids asked to watch it several times throughout the week.

Summer Project/Summer Fun Linky Party . . .Updated with instructions and more detail-sorry!

Hello everybody! It is Wednesday Thursday. I hope it was a good day for all. We get out of school for the summer on the Friday before Memorial Day. How about you?
I am a list maker so I am starting to think about the things I need to accomplish over the summer. I know we all have a long list! LOL.
It gave me the idea to have a linky party so that we can share something from our summer project list and summer fun list. If you teach year round, and are teaching during the summer then share what your lists entail for when you are off track. How about it? Link up and join in  :)

Here's what to do:
I have included the graphic below for you to use in your blog. Link up at the bottom of this post, write about your Summer Project/Summer Fun on your blog with a link back to this post so that others can join in the Linky Party also. :)

Here's mine: (edited and better detail added because I am not in the middle of watching American Idol and because I realized that what I put for my summer project, I will have done before school gets out. )

Summer Project:

 1. Delve deeper into the Common Core.

 2. Work on some things for my Teacher's Notebook store.

3. Wash down the walls and baseboards in our home.

4. Lose 30 pounds.

Summer Fun:

1. Going to San Francisco with my husband and son. (who will be home from college for the summer!)

2. Going somewhere (yet to be determined-any ideas?) with my husband to celebrate his retirement.

3. Starting an ETSY business with my husband.
(stay tuned for more info . . .)

Dreaming of summer, agghhhhh!

Summer project: Getting moved in to my new house. We have been living with my mother-in-law since October, while we have been building a new home. I want nothing more than to be in my own house again, in my OWN bed.

Summer fun: Going to my home town of Lehi, Utah for the Lehi Roundup. It is a tradition, we have gone every year since I was a kid. Lehi has the best parade and professional rodeo in Utah. Although I am kinda bias. :). Then we go to my Mom and Dad's cabin for some four wheeling and fun with the whole fam.

Magical Moments

Hey there everyone. I have a question for you . . . do you think that one of the best things about teaching is how fluid and unpredictable it is? I love that every day is just a little bit different. It is made up of moments big and small, serious and silly. I know that for myself, I sometimes get bogged down in the testing and high expectations we have of these little people and forget to stop and notice the little moments that are just plain fun . . . we had one of those today. All of the first graders are preparing 3 songs to perform for parents at our Spring Arts Night and we are practicing in our own classrooms in between the group rehearsals. I put one of the songs on today that they are just learning and what they did was so cute and completely their own doing as they gathered together on the rug to sing. I quickly grabbed the camera and well . . you can watch for yourself :)

Fun Ways to Review SeaSonS!

Here are some fun activities to review and practice seasons of the year.  I printed these pictures on card stock and them laminated them.  Then I had the students do a mix freeze group.  Each student had a picture, they mixed around the room and met with a student and told their partner what season their picture was.  "This is a picture of fall."  Then they switch pictures and mixed again to find another partner.  After they had mixed for several minutes, then I called out freeze.  Then yell out corners...

Then we played four corners.  I placed a paper with the name of the seasons in each corner.  The students have a picture and then they go to the corner that matches their picture.  Then they discuss to make sure everyone is in the right spot.   Then the students mix freeze again.  I call freeze.  The students go to the corner that matches their pictures.

After the students have practiced their seasons.  We can do a seasons line up.  Each student has a picture, they have to line up in order of the seasons, without talking.  You get to decide which season will come first.

Another game we played was seasons bowl.  The students use their chairs to form a circle.  Each child again has a picture of a season.  One person is in the middle, without a picture.  The child in the middle calls out a season.  Everyone with a picture of that season must move to another chair, including the child in the middle.  The child left standing gives his/her picture to the child who used to be in the middle.  The new child in the middle gets to call out the season.  If the child in the middle calls out seasons bowl.  All the children must move.  To make it more interesting, you can start talking out chairs, the person who does not get into a chair is out.  Just be warned you have to lay down strict rules, or it gets a little WILD!!!

Hopefully this all makes perfect sense, RIGHT?

Two For TUESDAY!

I made some fun story element anchor charts.  I saw similar anchor charts on teacher pay teachers, and thought I would quickly make some for my classroom.

Happy Monday . . .Spring Word Find

Hey everyone! I hope you had a great Monday. So here it is only the 2nd week of my feature "Simply Monday" and I forgot my camera at school. Aahhhh! Guess what? I'm not going back for the camera so I will have to share that tomorrow or the next day. I hope you understand.

Well, after snowing all day Saturday, we are back to sunshine and nicer temperatures today. Yay! Did you all get your taxes finished? Thankfully my husband does it at our house. I am the "missing paper finder". If you share this job then you know what I mean. :) Have a great evening. I am going to watch "Dancing With the Stars" and DVR "The Voice".

First is Fun

It has been awhile since I have posted anything. I am so glad that Lory has kept things up on the blog. We got our smart boards installed in February and I was busy with that and then my personal family kind of fell apart in March.

I realized this March that am I super grateful that I am an educator and especially in first grade. I wouldn't change my assignment for the world. It would take A LOT.

Let me explain.

In high school I thought I wanted to be an attorney, I wanted to put bad guys in jail. Dead set on it in fact. My first year in college I realized I didn't have the personality to be an attorney. I'm just not that type of person.

I transferred to BYU from Dixie State my sophmore year to be roommates with my cousin. I signed up for a Biology class (which kicked my butt) and fell in love with the sciences. I was going to do something with Environmental Biology. What that meant, I didn't know, and I didn't care. I loved science.

A friend of mine came home from his LDS mission in London that spring, and we quickly got engaged (we had known each other since I was 16). We tried to make things work so I could stay at BYU, but the stars were not aligning so I transferred again. This time we were both attending SUU. SUU didn't have an environmental biology program, so I went practical and decided to do secondary ed so I could teach high school biology. Teaching works well with a family, right?

My last year in college. with one quarter left, our oldest child was born. I hadn't quite earned my endorsement to teach, but I had enough credits to graduate. I was done, I was ready to be a mom.

Fast forward a few years, my husband had been teaching automotive at SUU for a couple of years, and my youngest  child was entering first grade. I was ready to go back and finish my endorsement. A few phone calls later I learned that I was far enough with my endorsement that I would be student teaching at the end of my youngest child's second grade year. I wasn't ready to leave him with a babysitter quite yet, so I added the elementary ed endorsement. The education department wisely counseled me to just do the elementary ed endorsement, realizing it would be easier for me to be hired.

While working on the classes for my endorsement (a completely different world than secondary ed), I realized I quite liked what I was doing. The professors were certain that I would get hired to teach an upper grade because of my bachelor's degree. I felt very blessed to finish right when Iron County was opening two new schools, but even after interviewing several times I didn't get any offers. I had been approached about doing an internship while student teaching, so I was pretty certain I would get a job at one of the schools. I was crushed.

I had been asked to do a long term sub position for someone who was on maternity leave and was planning on starting the school year there. The day before school started I was called to interview for a position at Fiddler's. I didn't realize until I got there that it was for first grade! I nearly panicked, but I wanted a position so badly I held my cool. I got a call at 6pm the night before school started that the position was mine. HOLY COW! I hadn't paid much attention to the lower grade's core, I was supposed to teach an older grade, remember. I didn't want the responsibility to teach someone how to read, that is a big deal. I could mess a child up for the rest of their life. I had a lot to learn, and I jumped in with both feet. I loved every minute of it.

Fast forward 6 years. I have been having a great year, even felt comfortable enough that I had applied to facilitate at core academy for first grade. My husband had been having what we thought was some minor/routine health issues (arthritis, no biggie), when we learned he had a genetic blood disorder that had potential for some pretty serious complications. His blood work was starting to look weird, so he was referred to a doctor who specialized in blood issues. The afternoon he met with the blood doctor, our world was turned upside down. We have since learned that he now has most of the serious complications from his blood disorder, it isn't going to be easy for him to get his health back.

I walked away from school in the middle of Parent Teacher Conferences and didn't return for 7 days. My wonderful friends stepped in and planned for and took care of my class while my husband was in and out of the hospital for the next couple of weeks. I owe them more than I can ever repay.

When I finally was able to return to school, my darling first graders were so excited. I was so glad to be there as well. It felt as if everything was right with the world. Their hugs felt so much sweeter, their quirkiness so much sweeter. I realized more than once (not that I hadn't had this thought before) that week, I can do this for the next 20 years. No problem.

I am SO grateful that I was led to this profession, especially now that I don't know what the future may hold. I know that I will always have the sweetest hugs, especially on those days when I have been on the phone with 3 different doctors, or when I return from an unexpected absence because my husband has spent another afternoon in the ER.

I LOVE FIRST GRADE.

FIRST IS FUN.
